Title:

Changing the Mindset: Empowering academic investigators to accelerate their discoveries and embrace commercialization by getting out of the lab to identify clinical need, customers, and partners.

Abstract:

Academic healthcare researchers are generating a plethora of new technologies with the potential to improve patient care. The reality is that reaching patients is often more dependent on the clinical need and commercialization challenges than the science. The challenge for academic institutions interested in translational research is to provide their investigators the insights and resources necessary to address these business risks sufficiently to attract private investments. The session will describe the lessons learned from pilot programs at the NHLBI NIH Centers for Accelerated Innovations (NCAIs) in developing and delivering healthcare-focused commercialization curriculum. The programs built on the fundamentals of the NSF I-Corps program and blended approaches and specialized content to address healthcare complexities including clinical workflows, regulatory requirements, and cost reimbursement. The session will provide opportunities for audience engagement with the programs at the various NCAIs in order to define opportunities for public private collaboration facilitate acceleration of the academic inventions towards commercialization.
